CHURCH HISTORY
Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church was organized in the year of 1879 by Reverends Lymon Simons and T. W. Wates. Brother J. B. Adams acted as secretary. At that time, Reverend Simons was called as Mt. Olive’s first pastor with a total of 16 members. He ordained Hampton Bryant and Jessie Hammonds as the first deacons.
Nine pastors have served to promote the cause of Christ during Mt. Olive’s history. They are as follows: Reverends Bunch, George Blocker, Mark Adams, C. Griffin, Robert Brown, G. W. Brightharp, Tommie Scott, Joseph T. Tate, Rodney Edmond. Throughout the years, thirty-two known deacons and hundreds of members have supported and worked with these pastors, investing their God given talents and gifts for the growth of His kingdom. In October 1990, under the pastorate of Reverend Joseph T. Tate, (1959 – 2009), Mt. Olive ventured out to build a new sanctuary due to the condition of the old one. The church edifice was completed May 1991. The Lord blessed Mt. Olive with a new pastor, Reverend Dr. Rodney Edmond (October 2011 – July 2022). Under the leadership of Pastor Edmond, the church grew spiritually by adding quarterly leadership training, weekly Wednesday evening Bible Study, Sunday School and Worship Service every Sunday beginning at 9:30 a.m. In October 2016, a new Church sign marquee was purchased and installed. In April 2019, the church celebrated the groundbreaking of a new educational wing. The building included two classrooms, kitchen, pantry, restrooms, stage and multi-purpose room. The wing was completed October 2019. The building dedication and Burning of Invoice took place October 27, 2019.
In March 2020, the COVID-19 virus was a global crisis. The impact resulted in stay-at-home orders. Mt. Olive adopted ways to stay connected with its congregation. The church quickly began to livestream worship services online through Facebook Live, YouTube, and Teleconference. In April 2022, the church completed the following projects: built a new sound booth, added new technology equipment, installed new carpet and painted the sanctuary. On March 10, 2024, Mt. Olive installed its 11th Pastor, Reverend Dr. Derra Ramsey. “To God Be the Glory.”
